LPN Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for LPN is to demonstrate their knowledge of practical nursing skills, show how they prioritize patient care and safety, and share their experience and flexibility working in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Situational interview questions

  • As an LPN, you encounter a patient who has an allergic reaction to their medication. What steps do you take to handle the situation?
  • Suppose you’re on duty and you noticed that a patient has an IV in the wrong place. What is your immediate action, and how will you go about addressing the issue?
  • You encounter a patient who is in distress and has difficulty breathing. How do you assess the situation, and what steps do you take to address it?
  • Suppose you are handed a medication administration chart that has errors in the patient’s details. How would you reconcile the situation, and what steps would you take to prevent any further errors?
  • You are working, and you notice that a patient has fallen out of bed, injuring themselves. How do you handle the situation, and what steps do you take to prevent any similar incidents?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you describe a time when you had to demonstrate strong communication skills with patients and their families?
  • How do you handle stressful situations in a fast-paced healthcare environment?
  • Can you provide an example of how you have utilized your problem-solving skills to address a patient care issue?
  • How do you approach working with a diverse group of patients and colleagues?
  • Can you describe a time when you had to demonstrate empathy and compassion towards a patient and their family?

Role-specific interview questions

  • What are the most important skills that an LPN should possess, and how do you demonstrate them in your work?
  • How do you handle difficult situations with patients, particularly those who may be uncooperative or non-responsive to treatment?
  • How do you remain current with advancements in medical technology and procedures, and how do you integrate that knowledge into your nursing practice?
  • Describe a time when your communication skills were critical in providing care for a patient. What did you do to ensure effective communication?
  • Explain the importance of documentation in the nursing profession, and how do you ensure that all of your documentation is accurate and complete?

STAR interview questions

1. Situation: Can you tell us about a time when you had to handle a patient with multiple chronic conditions?

Task: What responsibilities did you have in ensuring that the patient received adequate care?

Action: What steps did you take to manage the patient’s health and improve their overall well-being?

Result: What were the results of your actions? Did the patient’s condition improve as a result of your care?

2. Situation: Have you ever been in a situation where a patient’s family member was dissatisfied with the care they were receiving?

Task: What was your role in resolving the issue and addressing the concerns of the family member?

Action: What steps did you take to ensure that the patient and their family member felt heard and their needs were met?

Result: What was the outcome of your actions? Was the family member satisfied with the care provided?

3. Situation: Describe a time when you had to prioritize patient needs in a busy clinical environment.

Task: What were your responsibilities in managing patient care in this situation?

Action: What steps did you take to ensure that all patients received timely and appropriate care?

Result: What was the result of your actions? Were patients happy with the care they received, and were there any negative consequences?

4. Situation: Can you tell us about a time when you had to act quickly to save a patient’s life?

Task: What was your role in this critical situation, and what were your responsibilities?

Action: What steps did you take to stabilize the patient, and what procedures did you use?

Result: What was the outcome of your actions? Did the patient survive, and what was the overall impact of your efforts on the patient’s wellbeing?

5. Situation: Have you ever had to deal with a difficult or combative patient?

Task: What was your role in de-escalating the situation and ensuring patient safety?

Action: What steps did you take to manage the patient’s behavior, and what interventions did you use?

Result: What was the outcome of the situation? Was the patient calmed down and did they receive appropriate care?
