Teaching Assistant Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for a Teaching Assistant is for the candidate to showcase their communication skills, ability to work collaboratively with staff and students, and demonstrate their enthusiasm and passion for helping students learn.

Situational interview questions

  • You are assisting a struggling student who doesn’t seem to be grasping the concept you are teaching in class. Though you have already explained the subject multiple times, the student is still confused. What strategies would you adopt to help the student better understand the concept?
  • You are working in a classroom with students of different abilities. One of the students who is very bright is losing interest and is becoming less participative in class. What immediate steps would you take to re-engage the student in the classwork?
  • A student comes to you asking for an explanation of a topic that you strongly disagree with. How would you handle the situation without undermining the student or causing conflict?
  • A student consistently arrives late to class and disrupts the lesson. Though you have addressed this with the student on multiple occasions, the problem persists. What steps would you take to alleviate the frequent tardiness and ensure a disruption-free class?
  • A student is experiencing learning difficulties due to their personal circumstances. They are finding it difficult to keep up with classwork. As a teaching assistant, what strategies would you implement to support the student while also ensuring they are meeting the course requirements?
