Situational interview questions

  • Imagine you are a Sommelier working at a high-end restaurant, and a customer complains that the bottle of wine they ordered is corked. What steps would you take to resolve the situation while preserving customer satisfaction?
  • You notice that a particular wine that is highly recommended on your restaurant’s wine list is sold out. A customer who is insistent on having that wine is unhappy with your response. How would you handle the situation?
  • As a Sommelier, you have to ensure that the wine served in your restaurant is at the perfect temperature, but the temperature is not appropriate for your customer’s specific preference. What would you do to accommodate their request while ensuring that you maintain the quality of the wine?
  • A customer arrives late to a wine tasting event you are hosting, and they missed the presentation. They inquire about the wine and its tasting notes. How would you approach the situation, and what would you say to make them feel welcome and informed?
  • Imagine a scenario where a customer has specific dietary restrictions. As a Sommelier, how would you go about recommending a wine that pairs well with their dish, keeping in mind their allergies or intolerances?

  • Can you provide an example of a time when you had to exercise sound judgement in making an important decision related to wine service? What was the decision and how did you come to it?
  • The ability to multi-task and stay calm under pressure is essential in a busy restaurant. Can you provide an example of a high-pressure situation you were in and how you managed to remain calm while delivering exceptional wine service to customers?
