The goal for a successful interview for a Psychologist is to assess the candidate’s knowledge and skills in areas such as diagnostic tools, treatment methods, and ethical considerations in order to determine their qualifications and compatibility for the job responsibilities.

Situational interview questions

  • Imagine that a patient suffering from depression is not responding to treatment. What steps would you take to modify the treatment plan and help the patient?
  • A patient complains of overwhelming anxiety when in social situations. How would you help this patient develop coping strategies to manage their anxiety?
  • A patient with a history of substance abuse has relapsed despite therapy. How would you assess the situation and create a new treatment plan moving forward?
  • You are working with a patient who has a history of trauma and exhibits symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). How would you approach the patient’s treatment to help them overcome their trauma?
  • A patient presents with a history of emotional instability and mood swings. How would you diagnose and develop a treatment plan for this patient to manage their symptoms effectively?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you give an example of a time when you had to use your communication skills to diffuse a potentially volatile situation with a client?
  • Describe a time where you had to work collaboratively with another team member to achieve a common goal. How did you ensure that your team was functioning effectively?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you share a situation where you had to counsel a patient with severe anxiety? What was your task in that situation, which procedures did you follow, and what were the results of your actions?

2. Have you ever faced a challenging case where you had to develop a treatment plan for a patient? What was the situation, what was your task in that situation, what actions did you take to develop the treatment plan, and what were the results of your treatment plan?

3. Tell me about a case where you had to assess a patient’s cognitive abilities. What was the situation, what was your task in that situation, what methods did you use to assess their cognitive abilities, and what were the results of your assessment?

4. Can you describe a situation where you had to work with a difficult client? What was your task in that situation, how did you approach that client, what actions did you take to work with them, and what were the results of your actions?

5. Tell me about a time when you had to facilitate group therapy sessions. What was the situation, what was your task in that situation, how did you structure your sessions, what actions did you take to facilitate the sessions, and what were the results of your interventions on the group members?
