The goal for a successful interview for a Nurse is to demonstrate their clinical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and ability to provide compassionate patient care.

Situational interview questions

  • A patient has an allergic reaction to a medication. How would you assess the situation and respond to resolve the problem?
  • A patient is experiencing a sudden change in vital signs. What steps would you take to evaluate the situation and take action?
  • A patient is refusing to take medication prescribed by the doctor. What strategies would you use to address the issue and ensure the patient receives the necessary treatment?
  • A patient is experiencing chronic pain that is not responding to current treatments. How would you approach the situation to find alternative solutions?
  • A patient is showing signs of confusion and agitation. What would you do to assess the problem and provide appropriate support and care?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you tell me about a time when you had to demonstrate empathy towards a patient or their family members?
  • How do you effectively communicate with colleagues, patients, and their family members in a high-stress environment?
  • Can you describe a situation where you had to make a quick decision under pressure?
  • How do you handle conflicts with coworkers or patients in a respectful and professional manner?
  • Can you give an example of how you prioritize and manage your workload to ensure timely and effective patient care?

Role-specific interview questions

  • What is your understanding of electronic health records and how do you navigate and update patient information in the system?
  • How do you manage and handle patient data privacy concerns while still providing necessary information to other healthcare professionals involved in the patient’s care?
  • Have you worked with IV therapy equipment and procedures before? Can you walk me through the process of administering IV medications?
  • How do you identify and respond to early signs of patient deterioration or potential emergency situations? Can you give me an example of a time when you handled such a situation?
  • Can you explain your process for administering medication and what measures you take to ensure that the right medication and dosages are given to the correct patients at the appropriate times?

STAR interview questions

1) Can you describe a difficult patient interaction you had as a nurse (situation)? What was your task in that interaction (task)? How did you handle the situation (action)? What was the outcome (result)?

2) Have you ever had to manage a high-pressure situation in a hospital emergency room (situation)? What was your task during that time (task)? What steps did you take to manage the situation (action)? What was the outcome (result)?

3) Can you talk about a time when you had to advocate for a patient’s needs (situation)? What were your responsibilities in that situation (task)? What steps did you take to ensure the patient’s needs were met (action)? What was the outcome (result)?

4) Have you ever had to implement a new protocol on your unit (situation)? What was your role in implementing that protocol (task)? What were the steps you took to ensure successful implementation (action)? What was the outcome (result)?

5) Can you describe a time when you had to work as part of a team to provide care to a complex patient (situation)? What was your role in that patient’s care (task)? What actions did you take to collaborate with the team (action)? What was the outcome (result)?
