The goal for a successful interview for an Assistant Project Manager is to assess the candidate’s project management skills, communication abilities, and organizational abilities in order to determine their suitability for assisting the project manager in executing and completing projects within established timelines and budgets.

  • You are faced with a sudden change in project priorities that requires a significant shift in the schedule. How would you adjust the project plan to account for this change while maintaining the project’s timeline and objectives?
  • Your team members have conflicting ideas about how to approach a project task. How would you facilitate collaboration and ensure that all team members are heard and their ideas are incorporated into the final solution?
  • A key stakeholder expresses concern about a particular project component. How would you address their concerns and ensure that they feel heard and their input is incorporated into the project plan?
  • Your team is facing a challenging project obstacle that has not been encountered before. How would you encourage creativity and innovation amongst team members to find a solution to the problem?

Soft skills interview questions

  • How do you handle conflicts within your team or with stakeholders?
  • Can you give an example of a time when you had to motivate your team to achieve a project goal?
  • Have you ever had to adjust your communication style to work effectively with someone from a different background or with different level of technical expertise?
  • Tell me about your experience with delegation and how you make sure everyone is on the same page to achieve project objectives?

STAR interview questions

1) Can you describe a situation where you had to take charge and manage a project on your own?

Situation: A project that required supervision and management was assigned to me because the primary manager was unavailable.

Task: As the assistant project manager, my responsibility was to ensure that the project was completed successfully and within the given timeline.

Action: I divided the project into smaller, more manageable tasks and assigned them to team members with clear timelines and expectations. I monitored the team’s progress, provided guidance where necessary and ensured that all project requirements were met.

Result: The project was completed successfully, within the given timeline and to the satisfaction of the client.

2) Tell me about a time when you had to troubleshoot and resolve an issue during a project.

Situation: The project encountered an unexpected problem that hindered its progress.

Task: As the assistant project manager, my responsibility was to troubleshoot and resolve the issue as quickly as possible to avoid delays.

Action: I immediately identified the root cause of the problem and consulted with team members to develop a plan to address the issue. I allocated additional resources, re-prioritized tasks and communicated the changes effectively to the team.

Result: The issue was resolved successfully without any additional impact on the timeline or budget.

3) Can you describe a project where you had to coordinate with multiple stakeholders?

Situation: A project involving multiple stakeholders required coordination and communication to ensure that everyone was on the same page.

Task: As the assistant project manager, my responsibility was to ensure effective communication and coordination among stakeholders.

Action: I established clear communication channels and scheduled regular meetings with all stakeholders. I communicated updates, challenges and necessary changes in a timely and transparent manner.

Result: Effective communication and coordination among all stakeholders led to a successful project outcome and positive feedback.

4) Tell me about a time when you had to make a difficult decision during a project.

Situation: A project encountered a major roadblock that resulted in a significant setback.

Task: As the assistant project manager, my responsibility was to make a difficult decision to address the setback and get the project back on track.

Action: I consulted with team members and stakeholders, assessed the potential impact of different options and made a difficult decision to make changes to the original plan. I communicated the changes effectively to team members and stakeholders.

Situation: The project had a long-term goal that required strategic planning and vision.

Task: As the assistant project manager, my responsibility was to think strategically and develop a long-term plan to achieve the goal.

Action: I identified key milestones and considered possible challenges that could arise over the course of the project. I developed a long-term plan that took into account these challenges and ensured that the team remained on track.

Result: The project achieved its long-term goal and received positive feedback from stakeholders.
