The goal for a successful interview for an Auto Mechanic is to assess their technical knowledge and experience in repairing and maintaining vehicles, ability to diagnose and solve mechanical issues efficiently, and their proficiency in using various tools and equipment necessary for the job.
Situational interview questions
- You received a car that has been brought in with no obvious issues, but the owner is complaining about a strange noise. What steps would you take to diagnose and solve the problem?
- A customer has come in with a car that is stalling on acceleration. She says she had the fuel pump replaced recently, but the issue persists. What would you do to identify and fix the problem?
- A car comes in with an intermittent check engine light. You scan the codes and find multiple errors that don’t seem to point to a specific issue. How would you approach troubleshooting the problem?
- A car is brought in with a burning smell coming from the engine bay. What would you do to identify the source of the problem and make sure the car is safe to drive afterward?
