A whistleblower is a person who exposes illegal or unethical information or activity within a private or public organization. This information can refer to any kind of wrongdoing such as violation of organizational policies, law regulations, organizational or national security, fraud and corruption.

Whistleblowers can choose to bring this information of alleged wrongdoing internally to their superiors or colleagues thus keeping it organization’s matter, or disclose it publicly using media outlets, government, law enforcement and such.

More often than not, whistleblowers face retaliation from those being accused of wrongdoing, but more importantly, legal action, criminal charges and social stigma.

Laws exist to protect whistleblowers, and a number of third-party groups and even countries were known to help whistleblowers avoid harsh consequences of their choices.
