Analytical thinking is the term used to describe the thinking process of abstract separation of a whole entity into its constituent parts in order to study the parts and their relations.

It is a trait most desired in job candidates since it helps them to identify and define problems, extract key information from data and develop workable solutions for the problems in order to test and verify the cause of the problem and then develop solutions to resolve them.

Why you should hire candidates who have analytical thinking skills

Candidates who are inclined to analytical thinking process generally manage issues better by drawing on their own experience and knowledge and calling on other resources as necessary.

Candidates with analytical thinking skills:

– undertake complex tasks and break them down into manageable parts in a systematic way

– think of multiple possible causes and anticipate consequences of situations

– think of possible alternatives for a situation

– recognize and reconcile data discrepancies

– identify information needed to effectively solve problems

– weigh the pros and cons of options and alternatives

– systematically change variables to determine effects on the whole, etc.
