Ageism is a term which describes the process of discrimination that occurs due to a person’s age in the workplace. Ageism can be implicit or explicit, often includes stereotyping and prejudice.

There are several forms of ageism such as adultism, jeunism, adultcentricism, gerontocracy etc. The most common one refers to the discrimination of elderly people on the basis of a perception of them as being ‘unprogressive’ or ‘slow’.

Ageism in the workplace leads to age discrimination, which is illegal in most countries, therefore organizations and companies need to be aware of this issue and take prescribed steps in order to deal with it.
