Order Picker Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for an Order Picker is to demonstrate their ability to accurately and efficiently locate, retrieve and prepare orders for shipment, showcase their knowledge of warehouse safety practices and highlight their strong attention to detail.

Situational interview questions

  • Imagine you are picking an order in the warehouse, but you cannot find a product that is listed on the order. What steps do you take to locate the missing product?
  • You notice that a product has been damaged and cannot be shipped to the customer. What actions do you take to report and resolve the problem?
  • As an order picker, you are responsible for organizing the products in the warehouse. A product has been placed in the wrong location, and now you cannot find it. How would you go about solving this problem?
  • You receive an order that needs to be delivered urgently. However, a key piece of information is missing from the order, such as the address or contact information. What steps do you take to obtain this information and ensure the order is delivered on time?
  • While picking an order, you come across a product that has expired. What is your process for handling expired products and ensuring they do not get shipped to the customer?

Soft skills interview questions

  • How do you prioritize your daily tasks when you have multiple orders to pick and limited time?
  • Describe a situation when you had difficulty communicating with a team member or supervisor. What steps did you take to resolve the issue?
  • How do you deal with a customer who has received the wrong order?
  • Can you give an example of how you have demonstrated attention to detail in your previous job roles?

  • What is your experience with operating order pickers? Can you explain the process of safely operating an order picker in a busy warehouse environment?
  • Are you familiar with using a handheld scanner to pick orders? Can you provide an example of how you ensure accuracy when scanning items?
  • Have you ever encountered any technical issues with an order picker? How did you troubleshoot and resolve the issue?
  • Have you worked in a warehouse that uses automated order picking systems? How did you adapt to using the system and ensure accuracy in your work?
  • Can you describe a situation where you had to handle fragile or hazardous materials when picking orders? How did you ensure proper handling and follow safety protocols?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you tell me about a time when you had to pick and pack a large order that seemed overwhelming? What was the situation and what was your task? How did you plan out and take action steps to complete the order? What was the result of your actions?

2. Have you ever encountered a challenging order picking request or complaint? What was the situation and your specific task? Can you explain the actions you took to resolve the issue and ensure customer satisfaction? And what was the outcome or result of your actions?

3. Have you ever had to work in a fast-paced environment, where time was of the essence? Can you share a specific example of a time you had to complete an order quickly or work within a tight deadline? What processes or steps did you follow, and what was the outcome of the order?

4. Describe a time when you had to troubleshoot an issue with order fulfillment or verify an order for accuracy. What was your task and what actions did you take? What results did you achieve through your actions, and how did you ensure that the order was completed accurately and on-time?

5. Can you tell me about an instance where you had to work with a team to complete a large order or project? What was the situation, and what was your specific task within the team? What actions did you take to work collaboratively with others? And what was the outcome of the project?
