HR Generalist Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for an HR Generalist is to assess the candidate’s knowledge and experience in various HR functions, such as recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, compliance, and performance management. Additionally, the interviewer wants to ensure that the candidate possesses excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and analytical skills to collaborate with employees, managers, and stakeholders effectively. Moreover, the interviewer wants to evaluate the candidate’s ability to align HR policies and practices with business strategies and objectives to foster a positive work culture and drive organizational success.

Situational interview questions

  • Describe a time when you identified a problem within the HR department and implemented a solution to address it.
  • How would you approach a situation where an employee reported experiencing discrimination or harassment in the workplace?
  • Give an example of a time you facilitated conflict resolution between employees. What steps did you take to come to a resolution?
  • Have you ever implemented a new HR tool or technology to improve HR processes? How did you measure its success?
  • Imagine a scenario where a supervisor is struggling to manage an employee’s performance. What steps would you take to coach the supervisor and improve the employee’s performance?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Describe a situation where you had to communicate a difficult decision to an employee. How did you approach the conversation and what was the outcome?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to collaborate with colleagues from different departments to achieve a common goal. How did you ensure effective communication and cooperation?
  • Can you provide an example of a time when you had to handle a sensitive employee issue? How did you ensure confidentiality and support for the employee?
  • What is your approach to conflict resolution in the workplace? How would you handle a situation where two employees had a disagreement?
  • Describe your leadership style and how it has positively impacted your team in the past. How do you ensure that everyone on the team feels heard and valued?

  • What is your understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and how does it impact HR policies and practices?
  • Can you explain the difference between exempt and non-exempt employees? How do you determine which category an employee falls into?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to handle a sensitive employee relations issue. How did you approach the situation and what was the outcome?
  • How do you ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, such as the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act?
  • What experience do you have with conducting investigations into employee misconduct or harassment allegations? How do you ensure a fair and thorough investigation while protecting the rights and privacy of all parties involved?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a situation in which you had to resolve a conflict between employees on your team? What was your task in that situation, and what actions did you take to resolve the conflict? What were the resulting outcomes?

2. Tell us about a time when you identified an area in your organization where policies and procedures needed to be updated. What steps did you take to address the issue, and what were the results of your efforts?

3. Have you ever led a project that faced unexpected challenges or obstacles? What was the situation, and what were your responsibilities in that project? What actions did you take to overcome those challenges, and what were the resulting outcomes?

4. Describe a time when you had to manage a team through a difficult change, such as a restructuring or merger. What was your task in that situation, and what actions did you take to lead your team through the change? What were the results of your efforts?

5. Can you share an example of a successful employee training or development program you implemented? What was the situation that prompted the need for the program, and what were your responsibilities in overseeing the program’s development and delivery? What actions did you take to ensure its success, and what were the resulting outcomes?
