High School Teacher Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for a High School Teacher is to demonstrate strong teaching skills, deep knowledge of their subject areas, and a passion for working with young minds.

Situational interview questions

  • You are teaching math to a group of high school students, and one student is consistently struggling to understand complex concepts. You have tried a variety of teaching methods, but nothing appears to be working. How would you determine what the underlying issue is and what steps would you take to help the student succeed?
  • During a science experiment, a student accidentally spills a chemical that creates a potentially hazardous situation in the classroom. How would you handle this situation, ensuring the safety of all students involved, while also ensuring that the experiment is completed as planned?
  • One of your high school student’s parents has reached out to you, concerned that their child is not fully engaged in their coursework. How would you address this concern while maintaining the student’s confidence and privacy?
  • At the start of the school year, a new student joins your class in the middle of a unit. How would you ensure that the student is caught up on the material they missed? Would you modify the rest of the unit for the new student, and if so, how?
  • One of your high school students has been disruptive during class by talking loudly and making inappropriate comments. How would you address this behavior in the moment, and what steps would you take to help prevent it from happening in the future?

  • How do you handle conflicts between students in your classroom?

  • Can you describe a time when you collaborated with colleagues to create a more effective lesson plan?

  • Can you describe your experience in developing and implementing engaging lesson plans for high school students in technical subjects such as computer science or engineering?
  • How do you promote active student participation and create an inclusive learning environment for students with varying technical abilities and learning styles?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a situation in which you faced a difficult student in your class? What was your task at that time? How did you handle the situation? What was the result of your actions?

2. Tell me about a project you designed and implemented in your classroom. What was the situation that led to it? What was your task in the project? What actions did you take to make it successful? What were the results of the project?

3. Have you ever faced a challenging situation while collaborating with colleagues? What was your role in that situation? How did you communicate with your team members? What consequences did your actions have in resolving the issue?

4. Can you share an experience in which you tried to motivate an uninterested student? What was the situation? What was your task at that time? What actions did you take to encourage the student? What was the outcome/result?

5. Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a student who had a behavior issue. What was the situation? What was your task at that time? What actions did you take to address the behavior issue? What happened as a result of your actions?
