The goal for the successful interview of a Police Officer is to evaluate the candidate’s ability to handle high-pressure situations, their communication skills, and their knowledge of law enforcement procedures and protocols.

Situational interview questions

  • Imagine you are on patrol in an unfamiliar area when you notice a group of suspicious individuals attempting to break into a car. How would you handle this situation?
  • While on duty, you receive an emergency call about an armed robbery in progress. When you arrive at the scene, you find that the suspect has barricaded themselves inside a building. What steps would you take to safely resolve the situation?
  • You are working at a public event when a fight breaks out among several people. As a police officer, how would you contain the situation and ensure the safety of everyone involved?
  • While responding to a traffic accident, you notice that one of the drivers appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. How would you handle this situation and ensure that justice is served?
  • Imagine responding to a domestic disturbance call where one of the parties involved is armed. As a police officer, how do you ensure the safety of everyone at the scene while also taking steps to resolve the issue?

Soft skills interview questions

  • How do you remain calm and composed in high-stress situations while working as a police officer?
  • Share an example when you demonstrated excellent communication skills while interacting with the community as a police officer.
  • How do you handle situations where you may encounter cultural differences while performing your duties as a police officer?
  • Can you share a situation where you had to work collaboratively with your team to solve a problem or execute a project while working as a police officer?
  • Describe a time when you had to show empathy and emotional intelligence in dealing with a victim or witness during an investigation as a police officer.

Role-specific interview questions

  • Can you give an example of a time when you had to use force while making an arrest, and how did you ensure that force was used appropriately?
  • How do you stay up-to-date with new technology and techniques in law enforcement, and have you implemented any new technology or techniques in your previous roles?
  • Have you ever been involved in an investigation where you had to analyze digital evidence, such as data recovered from a computer or mobile device? If so, how did you handle that evidence?
  • Describe your experience using firearms and how you maintain firearm safety when on duty.
  • How do you handle emotionally charged situations or conflicts with members of the public, and what steps do you take to defuse those situations when possible?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a specific situation where you had to respond to a domestic disturbance call as a Police Officer? What was your task in that situation? What actions did you take, and what was the result?

2. Tell us about a time when you had to handle a difficult traffic stop. How did you handle the situation? What actions did you take, and what was the result?

3. Have you ever encountered a situation where you had to make a split-second decision that could have resulted in serious consequences? Can you walk us through that situation, your task in that moment, the actions you took, and the result of your decision?

4. Can you describe a situation where you had to work collaboratively with other officers to resolve a serious crime or incident? What was your task in that situation? What actions did you take, and what was the result?

5. Tell us about a time when you had to deal with a difficult and/or uncooperative suspect during an investigation. What was your task in that situation? What actions did you take, and what was the result?
