Occupational Therapist Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for an Occupational Therapist is to effectively demonstrate their knowledge and expertise in assessing and treating patients with disabilities or injuries, showcase strong communication and interpersonal skills, and display a genuine passion for helping individuals improve their daily lives through therapy.

Situational interview questions

  • You are working with a patient recovering from a traumatic brain injury, and they are experiencing difficulty with fine motor skills. They need to be able to write to communicate with their family members. How would you help this patient improve their fine motor skills to write more easily?
  • One of your pediatric patients has sensory processing difficulties that make it hard for them to feel comfortable in the therapy room. What strategies could you use to create a sensory-friendly environment for this child?
  • A patient with a spinal cord injury seeks your help in developing a home modification plan to improve their ability to access areas within their home. How would you evaluate the patient’s current abilities and develop a plan that meets their individual needs?
  • One of your patients is experiencing difficulties with identifying and articulating their emotional and physical needs during rehabilitation. How would you help this patient express themselves better and understand their needs more effectively?
  • You are treating a patient with a degenerative disease that may eventually require the patient to use a wheelchair. How would you work with the patient to help them adapt to potential mobility challenges and maintain independence while using a wheelchair?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you describe a time when you had to communicate complex medical information to a patient or their family? How did you approach the conversation?
  • How do you prioritize and manage your responsibilities and tasks when working with a large caseload of patients? Can you give an example of how you have done this in the past?
  • Describe a time when you had to work collaboratively with a team of healthcare professionals to provide the best care for a patient. How did you handle any disagreements or conflicts within the team?
  • Can you provide an example of how you have adapted your treatment plan to meet the unique needs and abilities of a patient? What factors did you consider?
  • How do you ensure that your patients feel heard and understood during therapy sessions? Can you describe a time when a patient expressed concerns or fears, and how you addressed them?

Role-specific interview questions

  • Can you explain the role of Occupational Therapy in the rehabilitation process for patients with physical disabilities?
  • How do you assess a patient’s functional abilities and limitations and use that information to develop a treatment plan?
  • Can you describe your experience with assistive technology and how it can benefit patients with disabilities?
  • How do you approach creating a home modification plan for a patient with limited mobility?
  • How do you work with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians and physical therapists, to ensure continuity of care for patients?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a challenging situation you faced while treating a patient? What was your role in that situation? What steps did you take to address the patient’s needs? And what results did you see from your actions?

2. Have you ever worked on a project that required you to collaborate with other healthcare professionals? What was your assigned task in that project? How did you communicate with your team members to achieve success? And what was the result of your efforts?

3. Can you share an example of how you handled a difficult patient during a therapy session? What was your goal for the session? What steps did you take to ensure the patient’s safety and comfort? And what results did you achieve from your intervention?

4. Have you ever faced a situation where a patient refused to follow your treatment plan? What was your strategy for handling the situation? What alternative approaches did you suggest to the patient? And what was the outcome of your suggestions?

5. Can you describe a time when you had to use your problem-solving skills to develop a new treatment plan for a patient? What was the patient’s condition? What challenges did you face in developing the plan? And what results did you see from your plan?
