The goal for a successful interview for Network Manager is for the candidate to demonstrate their in-depth knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and technologies, showcase their problem-solving and analytical skills, and highlight their experience in managing and leading network teams.
Situational interview questions
- Imagine that a critical server in your network is experiencing frequent downtime, and you have exhausted all known troubleshooting methods. What approach would you take to resolve the issue?
- Suppose that your organization’s website has been compromised by a hacker, and customer data has been stolen. How would you respond to the situation, and what steps would you take to prevent it from happening again in the future?
- You have been asked to upgrade all network switches to support the use of Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. The process is complex and lengthy, and you have limited resources. How would you ensure that the upgrade is completed on time and within budget?
- Imagine that there has been a major network outage, affecting all sites globally. You have received reports that a new network hardware device has been installed in the past few days before the outage. What troubleshooting tactics would you use to identify the root cause, and how would you prevent the issue from reoccurring?

- How have you managed network security measures in the past, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and VPNs, and what steps have you taken to ensure that network access is secure?
- Have you had experience with network performance monitoring tools, and how have you used these to optimize network performance and troubleshoot connectivity issues?
- Can you discuss your experience with network virtualization technologies, such as SD-WAN and NFV, and how you have leveraged these to scale network infrastructure and reduce costs?
- Describe a time when you had to troubleshoot a complex network issue and walk us through the steps you took to identify and resolve the problem.
