The goal for a successful interview for a Maintenance Technician is for the interviewer to determine the candidate’s technical expertise and experience in maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting various types of machinery or equipment.

Situational interview questions

  • Situation: A production machine has stopped working in the middle of a shift. As a maintenance technician, what steps would you take to troubleshoot the issue?
  • Situation: A safety alarm goes off in the maintenance workshop, indicating a potential emergency. What actions do you take to assess and address the situation?

  • Describe your experience with electrical troubleshooting in a manufacturing environment.
  • How do you prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks when dealing with multiple equipment failures?
  • Can you explain the purpose and function of a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)? Have you programmed or worked with PLCs before?
  • Have you ever performed preventative maintenance on hydraulic equipment? If so, what steps did you take?
  • Can you discuss your experience with welding and fabrication techniques, including safety precautions and proper equipment usage?

STAR interview questions

1. Share a situation where you faced an emergency breakdown in a critical equipment which impacted production. What was your task in the situation and what action did you take to resolve it? What was the result?

2. Talk about a time when you had to troubleshoot a complex mechanical issue that required multiple steps. Describe the situation, your specific task, the actions you took to resolve the issue, and the ultimate result.

3. Can you describe a time when you had to work on a maintenance project while balancing other priorities? What was the situation, what were your specific tasks, what actions did you take to prioritize your workload, and what was the outcome?

4. Share a specific instance when you were responsible for executing a preventative maintenance program. What was the situation, what were your specific tasks, what actions did you take to complete the program, and what results were achieved?

5. Describe a situation when you had to identify the root cause of a persistent problem related to equipment maintenance. What was the situation, what was your specific task, what actions did you take to determine the root cause, and what was the outcome?
