Internal Auditor Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for an Internal Auditor is to assess the candidate’s knowledge and experience of auditing principles and practices, evaluate their ability to identify and mitigate risks, and determine their communication and teamwork skills to ensure effective cooperation with other departments in the company.

Situational interview questions

  • Suppose you identify a discrepancy in financial records that indicates potential fraud. What steps would you take to investigate the matter and report findings to the relevant stakeholders?
  • Imagine you notice a process within the company that could be improved to ensure greater efficiency and cost savings. How would you conduct a risk assessment to determine the feasibility of implementing changes to the process?
  • Consider a situation where a team member repeatedly fails to submit required documentation on time, hindering progress on an ongoing audit. How would you address this behavior to ensure team members meet deadlines and deliver quality work?
  • Assume you have discovered a gap in internal controls that could lead to potential violations of regulatory compliance. How would you work with colleagues across the organization to implement appropriate controls and sustain compliance?
  • Suppose you are conducting an audit of a business unit and uncover evidence of unethical behavior or misconduct. What steps would you take to report your findings and ensure appropriate remediation measures are taken?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult colleague or supervisor? How did you handle the situation, and what did you learn from it?
  • How do you ensure effective communication with stakeholders during an audit, especially when there may be differing perspectives or interests at play?
  • Can you give me an example of a time when you had to adapt your audit approach to accommodate different learning styles or communication preferences on the part of the people you were working with?
  • Have you ever been in a situation where you had to balance competing priorities or pressures during an audit? How did you prioritize your responsibilities and stay focused on delivering high-quality work?
  • In your opinion, what are the most important qualities that an internal auditor needs to possess to be successful? How do you make sure that you are continuously developing these qualities over time?

Role-specific interview questions

  • What is your experience with risk assessment methodologies, and how would you apply them to your auditing work?
  • How do you ensure that financial controls are effective and efficient, and what key indicators do you use to measure this?
  • How do you stay up-to-date with changes in accounting and auditing standards, and what resources do you utilize?
  • Can you walk me through how you perform an assessment of internal controls, and how you would approach making recommendations for improvement?
  • Have you ever identified a significant financial misstatement during an audit? How did you discover it, and what actions did you take to rectify the situation?
