Forklift Operator Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview of a forklift operator is to determine the candidate’s experience in operating different types of forklifts, understanding of safety regulations and protocols, and ability to handle physically demanding tasks for extended periods of time.

Situational interview questions

  • Scenario: You are operating a forklift and carrying a heavy load when you suddenly lose control and the load falls off the forks. What steps would you take to address the situation and prevent it from happening again in the future?
  • Scenario: You are working in a warehouse when you come across a pile of boxes that are not labelled properly. How would you use your problem-solving skills to determine where these boxes should be stored in the warehouse?
  • Scenario: You are driving a forklift and accidentally hit a shelf, causing some items stored on it to fall off and break. What immediate steps would you take to ensure everyone’s safety and address the damage caused?
  • Scenario: You are working in a team with other forklift operators and there is a backlog of items that need to be moved around the warehouse. Using your problem-solving and time-management skills, how would you efficiently allocate tasks among your team to get the work done quickly and safely?
  • Scenario: You arrive at work and notice that the forklift you are assigned is not in good condition and could be a safety hazard. What steps would you take to report the issue and ensure that the forklift is taken out of commission until it is properly repaired?

  • Discuss your experience with specialized attachments for forklifts, such as side shifters and clamps. When are these attachments typically necessary and how do you properly use them?
