The goal for a successful interview for a Food Expeditor is to assess the candidate’s ability to prioritize tasks, ensure timely delivery of orders, communicate effectively with the kitchen and serving staff, and maintain a high level of cleanliness and sanitation in the food prep and serving areas.
Situational interview questions
- A server comes back to the kitchen and informs you that a customer at Table 5 has a severe allergy to shellfish, but the dish they just received may have come into contact with shellfish. What steps do you take to rectify the situation?
- During a busy dinner service, you realize that the kitchen has run out of a key ingredient for one of the most popular dishes. How do you prioritize which orders to fulfill given the shortage?
- One of the line cooks is unable to keep up with the pace of the kitchen during a rush, causing orders to be delayed. What steps do you take to ensure that orders continue to move efficiently and the customer experience isn’t hindered?
- A customer complains that their dish has been overcooked and is now dry and unpalatable. How do you handle the situation and ensure that the customer is satisfied with their meal?
- A dish has been accidentally dropped on the floor, and there is no replacement available. How do you communicate the situation to the server, and what options do you present to the customer?
Soft skills interview questions
- Can you give an example of how you have demonstrated excellent communication skills when managing multiple orders and requests from the kitchen staff and servers?
- How do you handle stressful situations during peak hours in the restaurant kitchen? Can you provide any examples?
- Can you describe a time when you had to adapt and learn new skills quickly in order to keep up with changing demands in the restaurant service?
- How do you prioritize tasks when there are multiple orders waiting to be expedited at the same time? Can you provide any specific examples of how you handle such scenarios?
- How do you motivate and encourage kitchen staff to perform at their best as a food expeditor? Can you provide any examples of how you have done this in the past?
Role-specific interview questions
- What strategies would you use to ensure timely delivery of food orders to customers, even during peak hours?
- Can you describe a time when you had to work with a difficult chef or kitchen staff member? How did you handle the situation?
- How do you manage communication with servers, chefs, and kitchen staff to ensure that food orders are correct and delivered promptly?
- Can you walk me through your understanding of food safety and sanitation practices in the kitchen? How do you implement these practices in your daily work?
- How do you handle menu changes or substitutions requested by customers, while still ensuring that orders are expedited quickly and accurately?
STAR interview questions

3. Describe a time when you had to collaborate with servers, cooks, and other restaurant staff to ensure timely delivery of orders. What was your role in the situation, and how did you achieve the desired outcome?
4. Can you share a time when you noticed an error in an order and had to act on it quickly to avoid delays or customer dissatisfaction? What steps did you take, and what was the result of your actions?
5. Have you ever dealt with an exceptionally busy day or event in the restaurant, which required you to expedite orders efficiently and prioritize tasks effectively? How did you approach the situation, and what was the outcome?
