Field Service Technician Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for a Field Service Technician is for the interviewer to understand the candidate’s technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and customer service abilities.

Situational interview questions

  • You are called to a client’s site to repair a malfunctioning machine, but you discover that one of the necessary parts is not immediately available. How would you approach solving this problem?
  • A client reports that a machine is not functioning correctly, but they are not sure what the issue could be. What steps would you take to diagnose and solve the problem?
  • During routine maintenance on equipment, you notice that one of the machine’s components is worn out and no longer functions as intended. What would you do to ensure the machine is repaired correctly and safely?
  • A client reports that machines at their site are having errors and shutting down unexpectedly. How would you approach this issue and ensure that the problem is resolved?
  • Upon arriving at a client’s site, you notice that the machine you’re supposed to be servicing has been tampered with or modified. How would you react to this, and what steps would you take to ensure the machine is repaired and safe to use?

Soft skills interview questions

  • How do you handle situations when the customer is upset or dissatisfied with your service?
  • Can you tell us about a time when you had to work collaboratively with a team to complete a project? How did you handle any conflict that arose?
  • How do you prioritize and manage your workload when dealing with multiple service requests at once?
  • Do you have experience in presenting technical information to non-technical customers? Can you provide an example of how you made complex information easily understandable?
  • Can you tell us about a time when you had to adapt to a new technology or process? How did you approach the situation and what steps did you take to quickly become proficient?

Role-specific interview questions

  • What’s your experience with maintaining and repairing large mechanical equipment?
  • Describe your troubleshooting process when experiencing a problem with a system in the field.
  • Do you have experience with maintaining computer networks and software systems used in the field?
  • Can you walk us through your experience in performing preventative maintenance on various types of machinery?
  • How do you prioritize and manage your workload when working on multiple service calls in the same day?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you provide an example of a difficult situation you faced as a Field Service Technician and the specific task or assignment you were given?

2. How did you approach the situation as a Field Service Technician, and what actions did you take to resolve it?

3. What were the specific steps you took to address this challenge? How did you determine the best course of action as a Field Service Technician?

4. What was the outcome or result of your actions as a Field Service Technician? How did you assess the success of your intervention?

5. Can you walk me through a successful project you completed as a Field Service Technician and the different stages of the STAR method that you applied?
