The goal for a successful interview for a CPA is to ensure that the candidate has extensive knowledge and experience in accounting, tax laws, and financial management, has excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and has a strong attention to detail.
Situational interview questions
- You are working with a client who is having difficulty organizing their financial records. How would you go about helping them establish a more efficient process for record-keeping?
- During an audit, you discover that a company has misreported its financial statements. What steps would you take to address this issue, and how would you work with the company to resolve the problem?
- A client has recently experienced a significant financial loss due to mismanagement by the company’s leadership. How would you work with the client to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future, and implement measures to mitigate the damage caused by the loss?
- You have been hired by a company to evaluate its internal controls and identify potential weaknesses in the system. What steps would you take to identify these weaknesses, and how would you work with the company to strengthen its controls?
- A client is considering a major investment in a new project, but is unsure whether it is financially feasible. How would you go about analyzing the financial viability of the project, and what factors would you take into account in your analysis?
Soft skills interview questions
- How do you ensure effective communication with your colleagues and clients while working on a project?
- Can you describe a situation where you had to handle a difficult client or team member, and how did you approach it?

- Can you give an example of a time where you had to work collaboratively with team members from different departments, and how did you ensure success?

Role-specific interview questions
- Can you explain the concept of double-entry accounting and how it applies to financial statements?
- How do you handle adjusting entries for prepaid expenses and revenues in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)?
- Describe the process you use to reconcile bank statements with general ledger accounts and resolve discrepancies.
- Are you familiar with tax preparation software such as TurboTax or TaxAct? Can you give an example of how you have used it in the past?
- How do you ensure client confidentiality and data security when transmitting financial information electronically?

2. Tell us about a time where you had to resolve a dispute between clients over financial records (Situation)? What steps did you take to find a solution that satisfied both parties (Task)? How did you approach addressing the problem (Action)? And, what was the outcome of your resolution (Result)?
3. Describe a situation where you faced a complex auditing issue (Situation)? What were your responsibilities in this case (Task)? What measures did you take to address the concerns and ensure successful outcome (Action)? And, what were the final results (Result)?
4. Can you tell us about a time when you had to investigate a suspected case of fraud within a company (Situation)? What did you do when you discovered the suspicious activities (Task)? How did you gather and analyze the evidence (Action)? And, what were the consequences of your findings (Result)?
5. Tell us about a project you worked on that required you to collaborate with other departments (Situation)? What differences in opinion or perspectives did you face during the project (Task)? What steps did you take to ensure that everyone was working together effectively (Action)? And, what were the final outcomes (Result)?
