The goal for a successful interview for a UI-UX Designer is for the candidate to demonstrate their ability to design intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces that effectively solve user problems.

Situational interview questions

  • You are tasked with redesigning a mobile app for a client. However, they have a limited budget and cannot afford extensive user research. How would you approach the design process to ensure that the end product meets the needs of their users?
  • You are leading the redesign of a company’s website, but a key stakeholder disagrees with the design direction chosen by your team. How would you address their concerns while also staying true to your design principles and goals?
  • A user has reported difficulty using a specific feature of a product you designed. How would you approach troubleshooting the issue and identifying potential solutions?
  • You are designing a UI for a new product that has never been built before. How would you approach the design process differently compared to redesigning an existing product?
  • A client has requested that you design a website that is accessible to users with disabilities. How would you ensure that the website is fully accessible and meets the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Describe a time when you had to work with a difficult client or team member. How did you handle the situation and what was the outcome?
  • Can you provide an example of a project where you had to balance competing priorities and how did you prioritize your tasks?
  • Tell us about a time when you had to present your design ideas to a non-technical audience. How did you communicate your ideas effectively and adjust your approach when necessary?
  • How do you handle constructive feedback and incorporate it into your work? Give us an example of when you received feedback and how you implemented changes.
  • Describe a situation where you had to work under pressure and how you managed to meet the deadline while still maintaining the quality of the design.

  • How would you go about creating a UX strategy for a complex web application?
  • Can you walk me through your design process from ideation to delivery?
  • Can you show me examples of how you have incorporated accessibility into your designs in the past?
  • How do you ensure that your design work remains consistent across various platforms and devices?
  • Can you explain the difference between responsive and adaptive design and when to use each approach?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you walk me through a project where you faced a particularly difficult UI/UX challenge? (Situation)

2. What were your responsibilities or assignments in that project? (Task)

3. What steps did you take to address the challenge and design an effective solution? (Action)

4. What were the results of your solution, and how did it improve the user experience? (Result)

5. Have you ever had to redesign a project based on user feedback? Can you describe how you incorporated that feedback and what the end result was? (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
