Security Guard Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for a Security Guard is to evaluate their ability to maintain security at the assigned location by assessing their knowledge of security protocols, their physical fitness, and their communication skills.

Situational interview questions

  • Imagine a scenario where a group of individuals is attempting to climb over the perimeter fence of the facility you are guarding. How would you respond to this situation while ensuring safety and security?
  • Suppose you are conducting routine patrols of the premises, and you see a vehicle parked in a restricted area. What steps would you take to investigate the situation while also maintaining safety protocols?
  • You witness an individual attempting to gain unauthorized access to a sensitive area of the facility you are guarding. How would you approach and manage the situation while ensuring that the person does not cause any harm to themselves or others?
  • Imagine a situation where there is a power outage that affects the security systems of the facility. How would you respond to this situation while maintaining security and safety standards?
  • Suppose you discover a breach in the security system of the facility you are guarding. What actions would you take to mitigate the breach, identify the individuals responsible, and prevent similar incidents in the future?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Tell me about a time when you had to communicate effectively in a difficult situation while on the job?
  • Can you give a specific example of when you had to remain calm and composed under pressure while dealing with a potentially dangerous situation?
  • Describe a team project or scenario where you had to work collaboratively with others and how you ensured everyone stayed on the same page?

  • Give an example of when you provided excellent customer service and how you ensured the needs of customers were met?

  • How would you handle a security breach or emergency situation, such as an intrusion or suspicious package?
  • How do you stay up-to-date with current trends and potential threats in the security industry?
  • Can you give an example of a time when you had to make a quick decision in a high-pressure situation while on duty as a security guard?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a situation where you had to respond to a security breach? What was your task, and what was your action plan? What was the result of your actions, and what did you learn from the experience?

2. Have you ever encountered a situation where a visitor or employee was behaving inappropriately or creating a disturbance? What were your responsibilities in that specific situation? What action did you take, and what was the outcome of your actions?

3. Can you recall a time when you had to respond to an emergency situation, such as a fire, medical incident, or other safety hazard? What measures did you take to address the situation, and how did you ensure the safety of those involved? What was the result of your actions?

4. Describe a situation where you had to work with law enforcement or emergency responders. What was your role in the incident, and what actions did you take to assist with the situation? What was the outcome, and how did you ensure the safety and security of those affected?

5. Have you ever identified a security risk or vulnerability, such as a breach in a fence or an unsecured door, and taken steps to address the problem? What actions did you take to mitigate the risk, and what was the result of your efforts? How did you communicate the issue to leadership or stakeholders, and what was their response?
