The goal for a successful interview for Sales Manager is to assess the candidate’s ability to set and achieve sales targets, their leadership and communication skills, and their knowledge of sales strategies and market trends.
Situational interview questions
- Suppose you have been struggling to hit your monthly sales targets, and you are tasked with finding a solution. What steps would you take to identify the root cause of the problem, and how would you implement changes to increase your team’s sales performance?
- Imagine one of your top-performing sales representatives has been experiencing a slump in sales figures for the past few months. What strategies would you use to motivate and coach them back to success?
- Your team is faced with a difficult customer complaint. The customer has expressed concerns about product quality and is threatening to take their business elsewhere. How would you investigate the complaint, help to resolve the issue, and ensure that the customer remains a satisfied client?
- Your team’s sales figures have been in decline for several months as a result of increasing competition and changing market dynamics. How would you develop a strategic plan to turn the situation around, and make your team more competitive in the market?
- Imagine one of your sales representatives has presented a deal that has a significant impact on the company’s bottom line. However, you suspect the deal might involve ethical issues. How would you investigate the situation, and what steps would you take to ensure that proper ethical standards are met while not affecting the sales results?
Soft skills interview questions
- Can you describe a time when you had to work with a difficult client and how you navigated the situation to improve the relationship?
- Tell me about a time when you had to adapt your communication style to effectively communicate with a team member who had a different approach to work.

- Can you walk us through your experience with sales forecasting and how you ensure accuracy in your projections?
- How do you go about identifying new business opportunities and developing a sales strategy to capitalize on them?
- Give an example of a particularly challenging sales situation you faced and how you were able to overcome it.
- Have you ever managed a team of sales representatives? How did you build a successful team culture and motivate your team to exceed goals?
- Can you discuss your experience with CRM software and how you effectively leverage sales data to inform decision making and drive performance?
STAR interview questions
