The goal of a successful interview for a Risk Manager is to assess the candidate’s knowledge and experience in identifying, evaluating and mitigating potential risks associated with an organization’s operations, financial performance and regulatory compliance.

Situational interview questions

  • Situation: A client has requested a loan that exceeds the company’s lending limit. What steps would you take to mitigate the potential risks involved in approving this loan?
  • Situation: A cybersecurity breach has occurred, and sensitive client information has been compromised. How would you handle the situation to minimize the impacts and prevent future incidents?
  • Situation: A natural disaster has caused a disruption in the company’s supply chain. How would you identify and assess the associated risks to the organization, and develop a plan to mitigate the potential impacts?
  • Situation: A new product is being developed, and there are concerns about potential safety hazards. How would you approach risk management in this situation to ensure the safety of the product and the customers?
  • Situation: The company is considering expanding into a new market with unfamiliar regulations and cultural practices. How would you prepare for and assess the risks involved in this expansion, and create a plan to mitigate them?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you share an experience where you had to manage a conflict with a team member or stakeholder? How did you approach the situation, and what was the outcome?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to delegate tasks to a team. How did you ensure that everyone was on the same page and working towards a common goal?
  • In your opinion, what are the most essential qualities that a successful risk manager should possess? How do you integrate these qualities into your daily work?
  • Describe a project that you managed where flexibility and adaptability were crucial. How did you handle changes to the project scope or timeline, and what did you learn from the experience?
  • Have you ever encountered resistance to a project or idea that you proposed? How do you communicate the benefits and importance of risk management to stakeholders who may not fully understand its impact?
