The goal for a successful interview for a Product Owner is to assess the candidate’s ability to prioritize and deliver value to the product, understand customer needs and user experience, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Situational interview questions

  • Your team has identified a crucial feature but cannot decide on its implementation. How do you facilitate the discussion and make a decision?
  • During the sprint review, stakeholders express dissatisfaction with a product feature. How do you approach this issue and ensure the team improves the feature in the next sprint?
  • Your team has hit a blocker in their work, and they cannot progress until it is solved. How do you troubleshoot the problem and remove the blocker?
  • A new industry trend has emerged that could substantially impact your product’s viability. How do you analyze the trend and guide your team in making strategic decisions?
  • During a meeting with stakeholders, there is a disagreement over the priority of various product features. How do you balance competing priorities and come to a decision?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you provide an example of how you have successfully collaborated with stakeholders on a difficult project, and what approach did you use to overcome any challenges that arose?
  • How do you balance the needs and priorities of different stakeholders when managing a product backlog, and what steps do you take to ensure that all stakeholders are heard and valued?
  • Describe a time when you had to adapt to changing circumstances or unforeseen challenges during a project, and how did you maintain focus and communicate effectively with your team and stakeholders?

  • How do you prioritize the product backlog and what factors do you consider?
  • Describe your experience in collaborating with development team members to maximize productivity and deliver high-quality products.
  • How do you go about gathering requirements from stakeholders and ensuring they are well-understood and met in the product?
  • Can you explain a situation where a feature you proposed was rejected by the development team and how did you handle it?
  • Describe the agile and/or scrum methodology and how you have applied it to product management in previous roles.

STAR interview questions

1. Describe a situation where you had to prioritize multiple features for a product. What was your specific task in that scenario, and what actions did you take to ensure the most important features were delivered on time? What was the end result of your approach?

2. Share an example of when you had to make a difficult decision regarding a product feature. What was the situation, and what factors did you consider when making your decision? What outcome did your decision have on the success of the product?

3. Give an instance where you had to bring multiple stakeholders with different opinions to a consensus on a product-related decision. What was your specific task in the situation, and what actions did you take to ensure all stakeholders were heard and their concerns were addressed? What was the ultimate result of your efforts?

4. Describe a time when you had to pivot a product’s direction due to unforeseen obstacles. What was your responsibility in that situation, and how did you determine the best course of action? What were the impacts of the pivot on the product’s success?

5. Share a story of when you had to lead a team through a product launch. What was your specific task, and what actions did you take to ensure a successful launch? What was the final result of your approach?
