The goal for a successful interview for Police is to assess the candidate’s ability to handle intense and stressful situations, their communication skills, and their knowledge of laws and protocols related to policing.

Situational interview questions

  • As a police officer, you receive a call from a citizen who reports a missing person. You have no leads on the person’s whereabouts, and the family is anxiously waiting for any news. How would you approach this situation and resolve it?
  • You are on patrol duty when you receive an emergency call about an armed robbery in progress. You are the first to arrive at the scene, but the suspects have already fled. As the only officer on site, what steps would you take to secure vital evidence and locate the suspects?
  • You’re dealing with a notoriously difficult gang that has been terrorizing a local neighbourhood. They’ve been known to carry weapons and retaliate if challenged. What strategies would you use to approach this situation and ensure that you maintain safety for yourself and the community?
  • You have just pulled over a suspected drunk driver that refuses to cooperate with your questions and field sobriety tests. How would you deescalate the situation and communicate with the driver in order to obtain the relevant information?
  • You are tasked with investigating a homicide case with little to no evidence or witnesses. What steps would you take to gather any available evidence, interview potential witnesses, and identify the perpetrator?

Soft skills interview questions

  • As a police officer, how do you effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds?

  • What is your approach to conducting a thorough and respectful search of a suspect’s electronic devices, while protecting their privacy rights?
  • Have you taken any specialized training in forensic analysis of mobile devices? Can you describe your experience with this type of investigation?
  • How do you stay up to date with new technologies and techniques for investigating cyber crimes? Can you provide some examples of how your department has adapted to changes in this field?
