  • You are conducting a routine traffic stop when you notice the driver is visibly under the influence of alcohol. How would you handle the situation to ensure the safety of everyone involved?
  • A citizen reports a suspicious individual lurking around a neighborhood at night. As the first responding officer, what steps would you take to locate and apprehend the suspect while ensuring the safety of the neighborhood residents?
  • You respond to a domestic disturbance call where the alleged abuser is armed and barricaded inside the residence. How would you handle the situation and ensure the safety of all involved parties, including yourself?
  • While on patrol, you observe a group of individuals engaged in a physical altercation. How would you approach the situation, intervene, and prevent escalation while ensuring the safety of everyone involved?
  • You receive a report of a missing child at a crowded public event. How would you coordinate with your team and other law enforcement agencies to locate the child quickly and safely?

Soft skills interview questions

  • How do you demonstrate empathy in your interactions with community members and colleagues?
  • Can you describe an experience where conflict arose on the job and how you effectively resolved it?

Role-specific interview questions

  • How do police officers ensure the safety and security of the public in high-risk situations such as hostage negotiations or active shooter incidents?
  • Can you describe your experience with using lethal force as a police officer, specifically any situations where you had to make a split-second decision?
  • How do you stay current with the latest technology and tools used in law enforcement, and can you give an example of a time where you incorporated a new tool or technique into your work as a police officer?
  • Can you describe your experience working with diverse communities and how you maintain positive relationships with individuals from various backgrounds?
  • How do you handle situations when a fellow officer is not following proper protocol or behaving unethically, and what steps would you take to address the issue?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a situation where you had to respond to a robbery? What was your task in that situation, and what actions did you take to resolve it? What were the final results?

2. Have you ever had to handle a domestic dispute? What was your role in the situation, and what steps did you take to ensure everyone’s safety? What was the outcome of the incident?

3. Tell us about a time when you had to diffuse a tense situation while on duty. What actions did you take to calm the situation down and ensure the safety of everyone involved? How did the situation end?

4. Describe a time when you had to pursue and apprehend a suspect. What was your task during the pursuit, and what actions did you take to apprehend the suspect? What was the end result of the situation?

5. Can you give an example of a time when you demonstrated effective communication skills while on duty? What was the situation, and what actions did you take to communicate effectively? What was the impact of your communication on the outcome of the situation?
