The goal for a successful interview for Nursing Supervisor is to assess the candidate’s knowledge and experience in nursing leadership, as well as their ability to effectively manage and mentor a team of nurses.

Situational interview questions

  • Imagine you have three nurses calling in sick on a busy day. How would you go about reallocating staffing and ensuring patient care is not compromised?
  • Suppose a nurse makes a medication error due to misreading the prescription. How would you handle the situation, and what steps would you take to prevent similar mistakes from occurring in the future?
  • Imagine a nurse is facing resistance from a patient reluctant to follow treatment protocols and disrupts the hospital environment significantly. What would you do to tackle this situation and maintain a satisfactory care outcome?
  • Suppose a patient or a family member lodges a complaint against you or one of your nurses. How would you investigate the issue and respond to the complaint to ensure satisfaction for all parties?
  • Imagine if a nurse needs to confront a doctor about questionable medical decisions that could have adverse consequences on the patient’s care. How would you empower your team to communicate their views without undue conflict, even when faced with authority barriers?

  • Have you ever worked with electronic health record (EHR) systems? If so, can you describe your experience with them and any challenges you’ve faced while using them?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a situation in which you had to handle a difficult patient care issue? What was your task in that situation? What actions did you take to resolve it? What were the results of your actions?

2. Tell me about a time when you had to manage an understaffed nursing unit. What was your task in that situation? What actions did you take to address the issue? What were the results of your actions?

3. Describe a situation where you had to implement a new policy or procedure within your nursing team. What was your task in that situation? What actions did you take to ensure compliance and adoption of the new policy? What were the results of your actions?

4. Can you recall a situation in which a patient’s family member was dissatisfied with their care? What was your task in that situation? What actions did you take to address their concerns? What were the results of your actions?

5. Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a conflict within your nursing team. What was your task in that situation? What actions did you take to resolve the issue? What were the results of your actions?
