Maintenance Worker Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for a Maintenance Worker is to assess their technical skills, ability to troubleshoot problems, and attention to detail in order to ensure they can effectively maintain and repair equipment and facilities.

Situational interview questions

  • Your team notices an unexpected water leak in one of the buildings you are responsible for. How do you approach the situation and what steps would you take to identify the cause and fix the problem?
  • One of the air conditioning units in a building fails during a hot summer day. How do you prioritize the repair and minimize the impact on the occupants of the building? Additionally, how do you prepare for sudden equipment failures like this in the future?
  • A building’s electrical system has experienced a major power outage. What steps would you take to first ensure the safety of the occupants and then go about repairing the problem as efficiently as possible? Additionally, how do you communicate with the building’s management about the potential causes of the outage?
  • A piece of machinery has malfunctioned in a manufacturing plant. How do you troubleshoot the problem and develop a solution to get the machinery back up and running quickly?
  • You notice that a set of fire alarms has malfunctioned in one of the buildings you are responsible for. How do you investigate the issue and ensure that the building’s fire detection and response system is back in working order? Furthermore, how do you ensure that similar issues don’t happen elsewhere in the building?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you describe a time when you had to deal with a difficult tenant or customer? How did you handle the situation?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to work collaboratively with your colleagues on a project. How did you contribute to the success of the project?
  • Describe a situation where you had to prioritize multiple tasks that needed to be completed within a short timeframe. How did you manage to complete all of the tasks efficiently and effectively?
  • How do you motivate yourself when you encounter challenging tasks or projects? Can you give an example of a time when you were able to persevere through a difficult task and achieve success?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to adapt to a change in the work environment or a new task that required you to learn new skills. How did you approach the situation and what did you learn from it?

Role-specific interview questions

  • What are some of the common electrical faults that can occur in a facility and how would you go about identifying and fixing them?
  • Can you walk us through your experience with plumbing repairs and replacements, as well as any experience you have with re-routing pipes or repairing leaks in hard-to-reach areas?
  • In what ways do you ensure the safety of employees and customers when performing maintenance tasks in a public setting, such as a shopping center or office building?
  • Describe a complex HVAC repair job you have worked on, including what the problem was, how you identified it, and the steps you took to fix it.
  • How do you stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and trends in your field, and what measures do you take to ensure you are providing high-quality and efficient maintenance services?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a situation where you were responsible for maintaining a facility?

2. What was your task or assignment in that situation, and what measures did you take to ensure successful maintenance?
