Machinist Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for a Machinist is for the interviewer to assess the candidate’s technical knowledge, experience and skills in precision machining and manufacturing processes, their ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, their attention to detail, and their problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities under tight deadlines and work pressure.

Situational interview questions

  • Suppose that you are a machinist who has been given the task of creating a piece of metal that is precisely measured and shaped for a particular project. However, you have noticed that one of the cutting tools on your machine is not functioning properly. What steps would you take to troubleshoot and fix the issue in order to complete the project as scheduled?
  • Imagine that you are working on a project that requires you to create a complex series of cuts and measurements on a piece of metal. However, you have discovered that there are inconsistencies in the material that are making it difficult to achieve the desired results. What actions would you take to analyze the problem and develop a solution that meets the specifications of the project?
  • Let’s say you are tasked with developing a machining process for a new project that requires precision documentation and traceability. However, you have discovered that the documentation process is inefficient and time-consuming, and is slowing down production. What steps would you take to streamline the process and ensure that all requirements are met with minimal time and effort?
  • Imagine that you are responsible for managing a team of machinists who are working on a particularly difficult project with tight deadlines. Unfortunately, one of your best machinists has called in sick, leaving you with a shortage of skilled labor. What strategies would you implement to ensure that the project is completed on time, without sacrificing quality or efficiency?
  • Suppose that a client has requested a custom part that requires a machinist’s expertise to create. However, due to the complexity of the design, there are significant challenges in achieving the desired final product. What steps would you take to analyze the design, identify any issues, and work with the client to find a solution that meets their specifications?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you describe a time when you had to work in a team to complete a complex project in a previous job? How did you ensure effective communication and collaboration among team members to achieve success?
  • As a machinist, your work will require a great deal of attention to detail. Can you give an example of a time when your focus and attention to detail allowed you to catch a mistake before it caused a larger issue?
  • Describe a situation when you had to adapt to a change in priorities or work processes. How did you handle the change, and what steps did you take to ensure the work was completed efficiently?
  • Can you discuss a time when you had to explain a technical or complex concept to someone who had little to no understanding of it? How did you approach the situation and what steps did you take to ensure that the other person understood the concept?
  • Can you describe a time when you had to resolve a conflict with a co-worker or supervisor? How did you approach the issue, and what steps did you take to come to a resolution?

Role-specific interview questions

  • What are the different types of machine tools you are familiar with, and how do each of them work?
  • What are the necessary safety precautions a machinist should take before operating a machine, and how do you inspect your tools for safety?
  • Can you explain the process of establishing cutting tools on a milling or turning machine? How do you determine the ideal feed rate and cutting depth for each job?
  • In your experience, what are some common mistakes or errors that a machinist can make, and how do you prevent them?
  • How do you adjust program settings or modify G-codes and M-codes to ensure that a machine will produce the desired output?
