The goal for a successful interview for a Lab Technician is for the candidate to demonstrate their technical skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow protocols accurately.

  • Suppose you are tasked with improving lab efficiency while maintaining the same level of accuracy. How would you approach this problem and what changes would you make?
  • Imagine you are given a complex experimental protocol to carry out, but it includes steps you’ve never performed before. Describe your approach to learning and successfully executing the protocol while minimizing errors.

Soft skills interview questions

  • How do you manage your time and prioritize tasks in a high-pressure work environment?
  • Can you give an example of a time when you had to communicate technical information to someone with limited knowledge in the area? How did you ensure they understood the information?
  • How do you handle conflicts or disagreements with coworkers or managers?
  • Can you explain a time when you had to work as part of a team to accomplish a significant project? How did you contribute to the team’s success?
  • How do you stay organized and maintain attention to detail when performing repetitive tasks or analyses?

Role-specific interview questions

  • What is the proper way to handle and store laboratory samples, and what measures do you take to ensure the samples are not contaminated during preparation?
  • Can you walk me through the steps for conducting a Gram stain and identifying the species of bacteria present in a sample?
  • Explain the different analytical techniques used to measure the concentration of proteins in biological samples, and which technique do you prefer and why?
  • What experience do you have with testing soil samples for nutrient content, and how do you ensure the results are accurate and reliable?
  • As a lab technician, you will often work with hazardous chemicals. What safety protocols do you follow to protect yourself and others from potential exposure and harm caused by these chemicals?
