IT Technician Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for an IT Technician is to demonstrate their technical skills, ability to troubleshoot technical issues, and show exceptional customer service skills.

Situational interview questions

  • You’re the IT technician for a small business, and a department head comes to you with a problem: several employees have reported receiving suspicious emails requesting sensitive information. What steps would you take to identify the source of the emails, mitigate the risk to the company, and prevent similar email-based attacks from happening in the future?
  • While performing routine maintenance on a server, you discover that that several key files have been accidentally deleted. The backups have corrupted, and the files cannot be recovered. What would you do to restore the files and get the server back up and running?
  • An employee reports that their computer is running very slow, and you suspect that a virus/malware has infected the system. What steps do you take to identify and remove the virus/malware, and what processes/systems do you implement to prevent future infections from occurring?
  • A group of new hires are scheduled to start next week, and you have been assigned to set up their computers, phones, and any other necessary equipment. However, the new hires will be based in a different location several hours away, and you must configure and ship their equipment to them. What steps do you take to ensure that the new hires have the tools they need to be successful on their first day?
  • A company has recently migrated their email servers to the cloud, but several employees are experiencing connectivity issues and cannot access their email. What steps would you take to troubleshoot the issue and ensure that all employees have access to their email without delay?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you tell me about a time when you had to explain a technical issue to a non-technical person? How did you communicate effectively to ensure they understood the problem?
  • How do you handle a situation where there is a conflict between team members in completing an IT project? Can you provide an example of how you resolved a similar situation in the past?
  • Can you describe a time when you had to deal with an upset customer or user? What steps did you take to handle the situation and ensure their satisfaction?
  • How do you manage your workload and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced IT environment? Can you share an example of a time when you had to reprioritize your tasks and how you handled it?
  • Can you describe how you stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry trends? How do you implement new technologies in your work and ensure successful integration with existing systems?

Role-specific interview questions

  • How do you troubleshoot common networking issues such as slow internet or intermittent connectivity?
  • Describe your experience with Active Directory and how you manage user accounts, group policies, and group membership.
  • What do you know about firewalls and how do you use them to secure a corporate network?
  • How do you perform a system backup and restore using Windows Server Backup or any other backup solutions?
  • Have you ever dealt with hardware failure issues? Describe a specific instance, how you diagnosed and resolved it?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you share a situation when you had to solve a complex IT issue? What was your task and how did you approach it? What actions did you take, and what was the result of your efforts?

2. Tell me about a time when a client reported a security breach. What was your role as an IT technician? What action steps did you take, and what was the ultimate result of your response?

3. Have you ever faced a situation where a system failure occurred? How did you identify the problem? What was your task in resolving the issue, and what actions did you take to solve it? What was the outcome of your approach?

4. Can you describe a time when you had to troubleshoot a network connectivity issue? What was your responsibility in this situation, and what action steps did you take to identify and solve the problem? What was the result of your actions?

5. Have you ever had to implement a new system or application in a company? What was your task in this project, and what actions did you take to ensure the successful installation and rollout? What was the ultimate result of the project?
