The goal for a successful interview for Handyman is to demonstrate a strong understanding of various repair and maintenance tasks, showcase problem-solving skills, and provide examples of successful completed projects.
Situational interview questions
- Imagine a customer has hired you to repair a leaky sink. When you arrive on the scene, you realize that the problem is much more complex than you anticipated. The pipes leading to the sink are severely damaged, and you’re not sure if you have the necessary tools and parts on hand to fix the issue. How would you approach this situation?
- One of your clients has just moved into a new home and has asked you to install a new ceiling fan in one of the bedrooms. However, when you arrive, you notice that the electrical wiring in the room is outdated and likely unsafe. What steps would you take to ensure that the fan is installed safely and that the room’s electrical system is upgraded as needed?
- You’ve been hired to install a new outdoor security camera system for a homeowner. However, once you start the job, you realize that the camera’s line of sight is obstructed by a tree that’s on the property. How would you handle this challenge?
- You’ve been asked to assemble a large and complex piece of furniture, but the instructions provided with the product are unclear and confusing. How would you go about handling this situation and ensuring that the customer is satisfied with the end result?
- You’ve been hired to repair a damaged fence on a property. However, once you arrive, you realize that the fence has been severely damaged and needs to be completely replaced. How would you approach this situation, and what steps would you take to ensure that the new fence is of high quality and that the customer is satisfied with the result?

- How do you continually improve and develop your skills as a handyman?
Role-specific interview questions
- Can you give an example of a time when you had to troubleshoot a complex plumbing issue? How did you approach the problem, and what steps did you take to resolve it?
- How would you go about repairing a leaky faucet? Walk me through the process step by step.
- Have you ever had to repair a damaged drywall or plaster? How did you fix the damage, and what tools and materials did you use?
- Can you describe your experience with electrical work? Do you feel confident working with a variety of wires and circuits, or do you have a particular area of expertise?
- How would you assess a problem with a malfunctioning HVAC system, and what steps would you take to diagnose and repair the issue?
STAR interview questions
1. Can you share a situation where you had to fix a leaking roof as a handyman? What were your tasks and responsibilities and what actions did you take to resolve the problem? What was the end result?
2. Have you ever encountered a difficult project as a handyman where you had to install new electrical wires? Can you explain the situation and your role in it? Tell me about the actions you took, and what was the outcome?
3. Can you tell me about a time when you had to repair a broken window or door frame? Share the specific details of the task and your actions to fix it. What was the result after you finished the job?
4. Have you ever experienced a challenging plumbing problem as a handyman? Can you describe the situation and your responsibilities? What was your plan of action to resolve the issue and what resulted from your efforts?
5. Can you explain a situation where you had to install new cabinets or repair existing ones in a client’s home? What was your responsibility, and what actions did you take to complete the task? Finally, what was the result of your efforts?
