General Manager Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for a General Manager is to assess the candidate’s leadership abilities, strategic thinking, business acumen, and communication skills in order to determine if they have the necessary qualities to effectively manage the organization and drive its success.

Situational interview questions

  • Imagine that a large customer has been unhappy with the quality of your products and is threatening to switch to a competitor. What steps would you take to address this issue and ensure that the customer remains loyal to your company?
  • You have been asked to come up with cost-cutting measures to help your company reduce expenses. What process would you go through to identify areas where savings could be made? How would you implement any cost-cutting measures you identify?
  • A key supplier is no longer able to provide the materials your company needs to produce its products. What options would you consider to ensure that you can continue to deliver your products to customers without any significant delays or disruptions?
  • Following an audit, it has come to your attention that there have been some irregularities in your company’s accounting practices. What steps would you take to identify and correct any problems, and how would you communicate any necessary changes to your team?
  • A new competitor has entered the market and is rapidly gaining market share. What steps would you take to assess the threat this competitor poses and to develop strategies that will allow your company to remain competitive in the market?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you share an example of a time when you had to effectively communicate a difficult decision to your team or stakeholders? What approach did you take and what was the outcome?
  • How do you prioritize and manage multiple projects or tasks at once? How do you ensure deadlines are met and goals are achieved?
  • Give me an example of a challenging conflict you had to resolve in the workplace. What steps did you take to address the issue and what was the final outcome?
  • As a leader, how do you motivate and inspire your team to perform their best work? Can you share an example of a time when you successfully motivated your team to achieve a challenging goal?
  • Tell me about a time when you received criticism or feedback from a coworker or supervisor. How did you respond, and what did you learn from the experience?

Role-specific interview questions

  • Can you describe your experience leading a team or organization through a major technological change or transition?
  • How have you successfully managed a team to meet or exceed technical targets, and what strategies have you implemented to ensure continued success?
  • In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing businesses in our industry with regard to technical innovation and how have you addressed these in your previous roles?
  • Can you walk me through a time when you faced a significant technical challenge and how you identified and resolved it?
  • How have you remained current with emerging industry technologies and how have you encouraged your team to do the same?

STAR interview questions

1. Situation: Describe a scenario when you had to introduce a new product that was initially received poorly by the market.

Task: What was your role in the situation?

Action: What steps did you take to address the market’s negative perception of the product?

Result: What was the outcome of your actions?

2. Situation: Tell me about a time when your team faced a significant challenge, such as a production delay or budget constraints.

Task: What was your responsibility in addressing the challenge?

Action: What did you do to mitigate the situation?

Result: What was the outcome of your efforts to overcome the challenge?

3. Situation: Have you ever faced a difficult customer complaint or negative review on social media?

Task: What actions did you take in response to the complaint or review?

Action: What steps did you take to address the customer’s concerns and improve their experience?

Result: What was the outcome of your actions?

4. Situation: Discuss a time when you had to manage conflicting priorities, such as meeting production goals while also addressing a major safety issue.

Task: What were your responsibilities in this particular situation?

Action: What did you do to balance competing priorities?

Result: What was the outcome of your efforts?

5. Situation: Talk about a time when you introduced a new process or policy to your team.

Task: What was your responsibility in implementing this change?

Action: What did you do to communicate the changes to your team and ensure they understood the new process/policy?
