Firefighter Interview Questions

The goal for a successful interview for a Firefighter is to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of firefighting techniques, their physical fitness and readiness for the job, and their ability to remain calm and think critically under pressure.

Situational interview questions

  • You respond to a fire at a high-rise building where the elevator is out of order. How do you communicate with your team and develop a plan to effectively reach the higher floors and extinguish the fire?
  • You arrive at a scene where a car has crashed into a gas station and caught fire. What steps do you take to ensure the safety of the surrounding area and put out the fire, while also rescuing any potential victims inside the car?
  • You are alerted to a possible chemical hazard at a local factory. Describe how you would assess the situation, identify the chemical or substance involved, and develop a protocol to safely contain and dispose of the material.
  • You are called to a house fire where multiple people, including children, are trapped inside. How do you prioritize the rescue efforts and coordinate with your team to maximize the chance of saving as many lives as possible?
  • You witness a fellow firefighter collapse due to heat exhaustion during a challenging operation. How do you quickly assess the situation and provide the necessary medical attention, while also ensuring the mission is completed and everyone else stays safe?

Soft skills interview questions

  • How do you handle stressful situations while working with your team?
  • Can you give an example of a time when you had to communicate effectively with someone who had a different perspective than yours?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to make a tough decision on the job. How did you approach the situation?
  • How do you prioritize tasks and ensure that you meet deadlines, while still maintaining quality work?
  • Can you tell me about a time when you had to work with someone difficult on a project? How did you handle the situation?

Role-specific interview questions

  • What firefighting techniques have you used to contain a rapidly spreading wildfire?
  • Can you describe your experience operating various firefighting equipment, such as hoses, ladders, and axes?
  • How do you manage your physical and mental stamina during long firefighting missions?
  • Have you ever had to carry out a rescue operation during a hazardous materials incident, and if so, can you walk us through the process?
  • How do you stay up-to-date with the latest safety procedures and firefighting technologies to ensure maximum efficiency in your job?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a Situation when you had to respond to a fire emergency as a firefighter?

2. What was your Task in that Situation and what were your responsibilities as a firefighter?

3. What Actions did you take to put out the fire and ensure everyone’s safety in that particular Situation?

4. What were the Results of your Actions as a firefighter in terms of the impact on the community or property damage?

5. Can you provide an example of a Situation where you had to work as a part of a team and what was your Task as a firefighter in that team? Describe the Actions you took to complete the Task and the Result of your efforts.
