The goal for a successful interview for Chef is to showcase their culinary expertise, demonstrate their experience and creativity with menu planning, and exhibit their ability to manage a kitchen and lead a team.

  • One of your regular customers leaves a review claiming that their meal was overcooked and lacked seasoning. How do you respond to this feedback?
  • Your sous chef calls in sick last minute and you have a full restaurant. How do you delegate tasks to ensure efficient service without sacrificing quality?
  • A main ingredient for tonight’s specials did not arrive on time. How do you come up with a creative alternative dish that still fits within the menu theme and satisfies customers?
  • One of your line cooks accidentally dropped a batch of entrees during a busy dinner service. How do you handle the situation to ensure your customers are still satisfied and the kitchen staff remains motivated?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a time when you had to deal with a difficult customer in the restaurant you worked at (situation), what was your task in that situation, and what action did you take to handle the situation (action)? What was the end result of your actions (result)?

2. Share a situation where you had to take charge of a busy kitchen during a staff shortage (situation). What were the tasks assigned to you during that time and what action did you take to ensure smooth operations (action)? What were the outcomes of your leadership (result)?

3. Could you provide us with an example of a situation where you had to improvise in the kitchen (situation), what task were you assigned to do in that scenario, and what actions did you take to make things work (action)? Can you tell us about the results of your ingenuity (result)?

4. Can you recount a time when you had to troubleshoot a recipe or handle a mistake in the kitchen (situation)? What was your task/responsibility in that particular scenario, and what actions did you take to correct the issue (action)? How did your intervention impact the end result (result)?

5. Describe a time when you exceeded customer expectations (situation) by ensuring timely delivery of orders while maintaining the quality standards of your kitchen (task). What specific actions did you take to achieve this, and what was the outcome of your efforts (result)?
