The goal for a successful interview for a Cashier is to assess the candidate’s proficiency in handling cash transactions, providing excellent customer service, and ensuring accuracy in maintaining records of sales and inventory.
Situational interview questions
- Imagine a customer comes to you and says they were charged for an item they didn’t receive. How would you handle the situation?
- Suppose a customer approached you with a damaged item they purchased. What steps would you take to resolve the issue?
- Imagine a cash register malfunction prevents you from processing transactions. How would you troubleshoot and resolve the issue to keep the store running smoothly?
- Suppose a customer becomes unhappy and agitated when an item they want is out of stock. How would you handle their frustration and maintain a positive customer experience?
- Imagine a customer approaches you with a complex coupon or discount promotion. How would you ensure the promotion is applied correctly and avoid any confusion or misunderstandings?

STAR interview questions
1. Can you describe a time when you had to handle a difficult customer as a cashier?

Action = Steps you took to de-escalate the situation, such as active listening and finding a resolution
Result = How the situation was resolved and the satisfaction of the customer
2. Can you discuss a time when you handled a high volume of transactions as a cashier?

Task = Your responsibility as a cashier to manage the transactions efficiently
Action = How you organized the transactions to ensure smooth processing
Result = How many transactions were processed and the overall success of the shift
3. Can you give an example of a time when you dealt with a mistake or error as a cashier?
Situation = A mistake or error in a transaction
Task = Your responsibility as a cashier to rectify the issue
Action = What actions you took to rectify the mistake or error
Result = How the mistake or error was resolved and any follow-up required
4. Can you describe a time when you went above and beyond for a customer as a cashier?
Situation = A customer needing additional assistance
Task = Your responsibility as a cashier to provide excellent customer service
Action = What additional help you provided to the customer and how you exceeded their expectations
Result = Positive feedback from the customer and increased customer satisfaction
5. Can you discuss a time when you suggested an add-on item to a customer as a cashier?
Situation = A customer’s purchase and potential add-on item
Task = Your responsibility as a cashier to suggest additional items
Action = How you suggested the add-on item and explained its benefits
