The goal for a successful interview for a Project Manager is for the interviewer to be convinced that the candidate has the ability to lead and manage complex projects, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and can problem-solve and make strategic decisions.

Situational interview questions

  • You discover that a critical team member working on an essential project component is consistently arriving late to meetings and missing deadlines. How would you approach this situation as a project manager?
  • A key stakeholder in your project is requesting that a significant change be made to the project scope just days before the project deadline. How would you go about evaluating the request and deciding whether to accommodate it?
  • You notice that one of your team members seems consistently distracted and is not contributing as expected to the project. How would you address this issue in a constructive manner as a project manager?
  • Your project is facing a significant barrier that could delay it by several months. How would you go about identifying the cause of the issue and developing a solution to address it?
  • You discover that one of your team members has been working on a project component with a serious flaw that may have significant consequences for the final outcome. How would you manage this situation, ensure that the issue is addressed, and prevent similar incidents in the future?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you provide an example where your communication skills have helped resolve a difficult situation in your past project management experience?
  • How do you ensure that all team members feel heard, respected and valued in your projects?
  • Can you describe a scenario where you had to handle conflicts within your team? How did you approach it, and what was the outcome?
  • Tell us about a time when you had to adapt to new changes, like a shift in project vision, new team members, or tasks. How did you react, and what was the outcome?
  • How do you handle a situation where your project is behind schedule, and you need to motivate your team to meet the deadline? Can you give us an example?

Role-specific interview questions

  • Can you describe the project management methodologies you have worked with in the past, and which one do you prefer to use?
  • How have you managed cross-functional teams in previous projects, and what strategies did you use to ensure successful collaboration?
  • Can you walk me through a project where unexpected challenges arose, and how you handled those challenges to ensure project success?
  • Have you managed projects with a remote or distributed team? How did you handle communication and ensure everyone was on the same page?
  • Can you provide an example of how you used data or metrics to track project progress and make informed decisions throughout the project lifecycle?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a project that you managed in the past? What was the situation, task, action, and result?

2. Tell me about a time when your team faced a challenge during a project. What was your task, and what actions did you take to address the situation? What were the results?

3. Describe a project where you had to implement new procedures or processes to ensure success. What was your role in this situation, and how did you go about implementing the changes? What were the results?

4. Can you discuss a project that you led that required a lot of teamwork or collaboration? What was your specific task, and how did you facilitate teamwork or collaboration? What was the end result?

5. Tell me about a time when you had to troubleshoot a problem during a project. What was your task, and what steps did you take to identify and resolve the issue? What were the results?
