The goal for a successful interview for a Line Cook is to demonstrate their cooking skills, showcase their knowledge of kitchen procedures, and highlight their ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
Situational interview questions
- Imagine that one of your co-workers calls out sick, and you have to take on both their tasks and yours. How would you ensure that all orders are met on time?
- You notice that a regular customer has a gluten allergy, but the dish they ordered contains an ingredient that contains gluten. What steps would you take to accommodate their needs without compromising the quality of the dish?
- Your restaurant runs out of a key ingredient in the middle of a busy dinner rush. How would you think on your feet to come up with a substitution or alternative dish that satisfies the customer’s needs?
- A customer orders a dish that is supposed to be spicy, but they find it too mild. They request that you make it spicier. How would you adjust the dish to meet their request without starting from scratch?
- The kitchen is experiencing communication breakdowns, which is causing delays in food preparation and delivery. What strategies would you use to improve communication between you and your co-workers to streamline the process?
Soft skills interview questions

- Can you discuss a time when you had to demonstrate multitasking skills and prioritizing tasks effectively to meet a deadline or customer demands?
- How do you maintain a positive attitude and motivate yourself when confronting challenging situations, such as long shifts, complex dishes, or unexpected delays?
Role-specific interview questions
- What is your experience with various cooking techniques such as poaching, braising, and roasting?
- Can you provide an example of how you have effectively managed multiple orders and timers during a busy service?
- Have you worked with any specialized equipment such as immersion circulators or sous vide machines? If so, please explain your experience.
- How do you ensure proper storage and handling of ingredients to maintain quality and freshness?
- Can you describe a time when you had to troubleshoot and solve a problem with a dish during service?
