The goal for a successful interview for a Legal Assistant is to demonstrate their knowledge of legal terminology, procedures and documentation, highlight their ability to manage time effectively and work under pressure, and showcase their strong communication skills for effective collaboration with legal teams and clients.

Situational interview questions

  • How would you handle a situation where a client presents you with conflicting information about a case, and you need to make a decision on how to proceed?
  • If you were working on a complex legal case and suddenly the file disappears, what steps would you take to try and find it?
  • If a deadline was approaching and you were waiting for a critical piece of information from a client or colleague that had not been provided, how would you handle this situation?
  • Imagine a scenario where a senior attorney assigns you a case with very little detail or background information, how would you go about gathering the necessary information to proceed with the case?
  • If a contract deadline is fast approaching, and it is clear that the other party is not meeting their obligations, how would you work to ensure that your client’s interests are protected?

Soft skills interview questions

  • Can you describe a time when you had to communicate complex legal information to someone without a legal background? How did you approach the situation?
  • How do you handle and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced legal environment?

  • What experience do you have with legal research in regards to court cases?

  • How do you ensure accuracy and attention to detail when proofreading legal documents?
