The goal for a successful interview for Employee Relations is to assess the candidate’s knowledge and experience in resolving conflicts, managing employee grievances, and ensuring compliance with labor laws and company policies.

Situational interview questions

  • A co-worker makes repeated inappropriate comments to a female colleague, despite her requests to stop. How would you handle this situation as an Employee Relations specialist?
  • An employee reports that they feel discriminated against by a supervisor based on their race. How would you investigate this claim and address it in an appropriate manner?
  • A manager has documented poor performance and behavior in an employee, but they refuse to acknowledge the issues and improve. How would you work with both parties to find a resolution that benefits the company?
  • An employee has consistently been tardy to work and missed important meetings. What steps would you take as an Employee Relations specialist to address this issue and ensure the employee understands the importance of punctuality and attendance?
  • A group of employees express concerns to you about a new policy that they believe will negatively impact their work-life balance. How would you approach this situation, listen to their concerns, and work with management to find a solution that is satisfactory for everyone involved?

Role-specific interview questions

  • Can you describe a situation in which you had to navigate a complex employee dispute? How did you handle the situation?
  • How do you stay up to date with changes in employment law and regulations to ensure compliance within the company?
  • Can you explain your experience with conducting investigations into employee complaints or misconduct? How did you handle the process and communicate with all parties involved?
  • How do you approach working with management to ensure that policies and practices in place are fair and consistent for employees?
  • Can you provide an example or strategy you would use to address an employee who is expressing dissatisfaction with their job or management? How would you go about resolving the issue and improving the employee’s experience at work?

STAR interview questions

1. Can you describe a situation where you had to handle an employee performance issue? What was your task in that situation, and what action did you take? What was the result of your actions?

2. Have you ever managed a conflict between two employees? Can you walk me through the situation, your task, the actions taken, and the outcome?

3. Describe a time when you had to address an employee’s complaint regarding their working conditions. What were your responsibilities in that situation, and what steps did you take to resolve the issue? What was the result?

4. Can you share an experience where you had to investigate an employee grievance? What was your task in that situation, what actions did you take, and what was the outcome of your investigation?

5. Tell me about a workplace change initiative you led. What was the situation, your task, the actions you took, and what was the result of the change?
